The summit kicked off on Tuesday with the participation of heads of state and other senior officials from Arab countries as well as representatives from international organizations, including the United Nations’ secretary general.
Held with the motto of unity, it is the first Arab League summit since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A document called the Algeria Declaration which had been drafted by the member states’ foreign ministers earlier is also discussed at the summit.
The issue of Palestine is among the main priorities mentioned in the document, which also features recommendations about crises in six Arab countries.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who chairs the summit, said in the opening speech that the meeting is being held in sensitive and complicated conditions in the region and beyond.
He also called for creation of an Arab economic bloc for protecting common interests as well as holding an emergency UN General Assembly meeting to grand Palestine full UN membership.
Arab League Secretary Genera Ahmed Aboul Gheit in his address underscored the need for an end to the Syrian crisis and efforts for the return of the country to the Arab League.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also spoke at the event, saying the UN’s stance on the issue of Palestine is that occupation of Palestine must end.
Iraq’s new president, Abdul Latif Rashid, in his speech called on Arab countries to resolve their differences via dialogue.
The summit in Algeria will conclude today.
The Arab League is a regional multi-national organization of Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
Established in 1945, the League is headquartered in Cairo. It says its mission is to promote trade and economic growth as well as sovereignty and political stability in the region.
